Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ordering, pickup, and cooking with Portage Eats.

How does Portage Eats' meal kit pickup work?

Portage Eats is a weekly pre-order meal kit service in Portland, Maine. You browse the menu online, place your order by Wednesday at 5 PM, and pick up your kit that weekend at Fork Food Lab in South Portland. Every kit includes the necessary ingredients for your selected meals and a step-by-step recipe card.

What comes in a Portage Eats meal kit?

Every ingredient for the meal — proteins, produce, sauces, spices, even pantry basics like oil and salt — is pre-packed with a step-by-step recipe card. The only things you supply are your own pots, pans, and utensils. Unlike most prepackaged meal kits, you won't be asked to raid your pantry to finish the recipe.

When do I need to order my meal kit by?

Orders close Wednesday at 5 PM for that weekend's pickup at Fork Food Lab in South Portland. If you miss the weekly cutoff, your order rolls to the following weekend.

Where do I pick up my Portage Eats meal kit?

You pick up your meal kit at Fork Food Lab, 95 Darling Ave, South Portland, ME, on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

How long do meal kits last in the fridge?

Each order and meal kit will be different. Portage Eats meal kits are packed cold on the morning of pickup. It is recommended that the kits be placed in a cooler or refrigerator within a few hours of pickup. Because our ingredients come straight from Maine farms rather than a national warehouse, they arrive fresher, but also need to be consumed sooner rather than later to enjoy freshness.

Are meal kits cheaper than groceries or eating out?

It depends on how you shop and eat. Meal kits generally cost more per serving than buying raw groceries, but less than dining out — and they eliminate meal planning, shopping trips, and the waste of buying full-size ingredients you only need a little of. Portage Eats pricing is listed on the menu, so you can see exactly what a kit costs before you order.

Can I order a meal kit if I have food allergies or dietary restrictions?

Every Portage Eats kit lists its full ingredients on the product page, and we flag common allergens. Our kits are prepared in a shared commercial kitchen that handles wheat, dairy, nuts, and shellfish, so we can't guarantee allergen-free kits. If you have a serious allergy, email us before ordering and we'll walk you through exactly what's in the box.

Are your ingredients locally sourced?

Portage Eats sources from Maine farms, fisheries, and small producers whenever possible.

Can I change or cancel my meal kit order?

Yes. Email Info@PortageEats.com before the Wednesday cutoff and we'll adjust or refund your order. After the cutoff we've already purchased ingredients on your behalf, so we can't offer refunds — but we can usually move your pickup to a different day that weekend.

What happens if I miss my pickup?

Email us as soon as you know you can't make it — we can usually hold your kit or arrange another pickup time, and a friend or family member is always welcome to pick up your order for you. Meal kits are perishable and can't be resold, so the earlier you reach out, the more options we have.

Do you deliver meal kits in Portland, Maine?

Not yet — Portage Eats is pickup-only for now. Picking up at Fork Food Lab in South Portland keeps your kit fresher and your price lower than shipped meal kits. Local delivery is on our radar for future seasons.

Do I need to know how to cook to use a meal kit?

No experience needed. Every kit includes a step-by-step recipe card. If you can chop and stir, you can cook a Portage Eats meal kit.
